Canmore Wedding Photographer | A focus on Florals with Flowers by Janie

We’ve been honoured to work with Janie and Oscar of Flowers by Janie on several different occasions, the most recent being our S’more Love Winter engagement session in Canmore.

Here is a dedicated blog to the gorgeous florals she created to go with the awesomely fun and Wintery-sweet design by Lisa of WE CONNECT weddings + events.

We asked Janie to share with us about her design process and inspiration to provide you a little behind-the-scenes insight about the floral designs featured throughout our session with Shyla & Serge:

Background: We chose the flower varieties and designed the fresh floral pieces for the S’more Love engagement session based on a cool winter colour palette of purples, greens and blues. We chose a natural colour palette for both the out door photos and to compliment the interior space of the Wild Orchid Bistro which had a green patterned wall as the backdrop for the romantic candlelit dinner.

We used the same colour palette of deep purples, greens and blues throughout the indoor and outdoor design concepts adding in flowers with lots of fun textures and shapes like ornamental kale & green trick which looks like moss but really is a dianthus (carnation). Since moss grows naturally in the mountains we wanted to bring a similar look into the bouquet since it would be getting photographed amongst the natural mountain landscapes and trees of the Rockies.

The Bouquet: For the bouquet we chose ornamental kale, purple lisianthus, green trick, eryngium (aka: sea holly), privet berries, purple trachelium and green mini hydrangea.  We used curly willow to create a caging effect through the bouquet, also tying in an element of wood and a neutral colour into the bouquet.

The Tablescape: We used the same flower varieties for the indoor cascading tablescape but included purple mokara orchids to draw in the oriental theme of the Wild Orchid Bistro into the flowers. We used Italian Ruscus, myrtle and seeded eucalyptus to create the cascading, waterfall arrangement style.

Being in Canmore and the Rockies it was very important for us to use a variety of foliage, flowers and textures that resonate with the natural landscape. We included Red Osier Dogwood branches at the restaurant as well as birch bark containers to combine the oriental with the western Rockies.

For an extra special touch, we include artichokes to hold the name cards at the tables as they were a fun touch. The Wild Orchid Bistro is known for its culinary skills so using artichokes and kale, which can also be used in cooking, were perfect for the indoor table scape.
